Chapter one~Kell meets Syrii
A girl stood at the window of her castle home, watching the waves slam into the shore.
Why am I not out there, swimming in the salty water and catching crabs in the sand? Why must I stay here, in my room, for the whole summer?
She wondered, twirling a piece of golden hair ion her finger.
She turned away from the window and sat on her over-stuffed bed. Scowling she stood and walked out of her room, sneaking past the maids quarters. At the moment she was wearing a dark green satin dress, with dark green slippers. She had silver-blue eyes, which made her siblings jealous, for they were a beautiful color. Her hair hung loose in ringlets of gold and light silver. She was not old, only twelve years of age, yet there were silver hairs intertwining with the golden ones. She didn’t mind really, but her father and mother did.
“She seems too old with those silver strands.” they would always say. But no matter what they did, or how many spells they had local witches put on it, the hairs wouldn’t go away.
“Aw well.” She always told them,” I really don’t mind. It isn’t even your hair, so why do you care?”
Her name was Kelleela, but hated to be called that. She is known, by her siblings, as Kell. That is the name she likes, that is the name she answers to.
Kell skipped out to the corrals and peeked inside. There was a trainer, waiting for her brother to come to his lessons. Sir Cephel didn’t know that Kell was supposed to stay in her room, so all he did as she walked by was wave.
“Why, hello there Kell. Where is your brother?” he asked, tapping his foot impatiently.
“I am not sure Sir Cephel. He did not already have horse riding lessons?” Kell asked, knowing that he didn’t. “For he told me that you made him do them earlier than usual.”
Sir Cephel snorted and began to walk up toward the castle, muttering words under his breath as he did so.
Kell chuckled and walked to the far end of the stable, patting all of the horses in turn. She snuck out through a back door and leaned against the wall, listening for footsteps or anything of the sort. Seeing that all was clear, she took off toward the woods, lifting her dress to keep from tripping on it.
This is where I come in. I am a unicorn demon. You are probably saying, ‘yeah, sure. A unicorn demon? Unicorns are not demons!’ But when a human and a unicorn are mixed, then that is what you call them. My mother had been cursed of being a unicorn-human for the rest of her life, but nothing happened. The transformation happened to me. I grew long silver hair, horse ears upon my head, a long lion-ish tail (for unicorn tails are like lion’s), and silver eyes. And the ability to change to a unicorn whenever I desire. They threw me out at the age of four, and I have been living on my own in the forest ever since with my best friend, Meeaku the white-pelted bobcat. But, enough about me. Read on…
I spied the human long before she saw me. I hissed the exact time she screamed and fell, head over heels, down a small hill and into a ditch. I laughed aloud, walking to the edge of the hill and leaning on a tree trunk.
“That was not funny!” she snarled, standing and picking twigs out of her hair.
I brushed a strand of silver hair away from my eyes and grinned. “To me, it was.”
“I can have you killed!”
“Not if I kill you first.”
She shuddered at that. Believe me, I could grow used to scaring people every day, but it wasn’t in my nature.
“Need help?” I asked, beginning to walk down toward her.
“N-NOOO!! Stay back demon!” she cried out, holding a necklace of purple beads. A cross was the charm. I snorted and kept walking, stopping in front of her. She held the cross out defiantly. I grasped it, ripping it from her grasp and tossing it to the ground. She stood, putting the hand that had held the necklace up, as if trying to protect herself from some hidden danger. I rolled my eyes. “I am not an evil demon that is here for your soul, princess. I am what is known as a unicorn demon. Notice the tail? The ears?”
“Why do you think I screamed? For no reason?”
I pretended to looked shocked and slightly hurt. “Oh, so you’re scared of me?!”
“NO! I didn’t say that!” Kell cried out, climbing up to stand in front of me. “So, you are a unicorn demon. Interesting. And weird…”
“I wouldn’t be talking, wolf demon.”
“What are you talking about?” she asked, hands on her hips.
“I mean…you’ll figure it out sooner or later….by the way, my names Syrii.”
“Mine is Kell.” she told me. “Who is your friend?” she asked, looking over at the small bobcat.
“My name is Meeaku.” he told her, grinning.
I grinned as well, knowing exactly what he was thinking. Yes, she would soon figure it out….she would soon know of what is to come…
